Alcan Packaging - a business unit of Rio Tinto Alcan - has received ISO 15378:2006 certification at its glass plants in Authon and Lucenay as well as its Montreuil Bellay plant for the flexible beauty market. This ISO certification rewards high standards in the design, manufacture and supply of primary packaging materials for medicinal products.
"These three plants now join several of our other plants in reaching this advanced level of certification and demonstrate our continued commitment to providing world-class packaging for the healthcare industry," said Mike Schmitt, President, Alcan Global Pharmaceutical Packaging.
Initially conceived for glass and then expanded to cover all primary packaging materials for pharmaceuticals, the ISO 15378:2006 standard represents a complete, integrated quality management system that combines ISO 9001:2000 and Good Manufacturing Practices for the production of primary pharmaceutical packaging materials.
"We are proud to have reached this milestone, which is definitely a competitive advantage. The application of the ISO 15378:2006 standard ensures that our customers' sensitive pharmaceutical products are packaged safely and effectively in accordance with the highest international quality standards" said Christian Durand, Vice President and General Manager, Glass Tubing Europe.
In 2007, Alcan Packaging's Kreuzlingen plant in Switzerland became the first pharmaceutical flexible packaging business in the world to achieve this standard.
