Alcan announced today that it is funding the BIOCAP Canada Foundation, an organization dedicated to identifying biosphere solutions to the challenges of energy security and climate change.

“Through Alcan’s sponsorship, BIOCAP will continue to provide the insights and technologies that ultimately play a critical role in advancing the use of biomass to generate tradable emissions offsets, reduce greenhouse gases and generate renewable clean energy sources,” said Daniel Gagnier, Senior Vice President, Corporate and External Affairs, Alcan Inc. “Alcan is aggressively pursuing greenhouse gas reductions and the responsible management of its hydro resources across its installations, proving that it is possible to reduce the Company’s environmental footprint while maintaining a competitive advantage,” he added.

Between 1990 and 2005, Alcan recorded a 25 percent reduction in GHG emissions intensity (direct and indirect), making a renewed commitment in 2006 to reduce emissions a further 10 percent in intensity from 2006-2010.

“Alcan has won numerous awards for their success in incorporating sustainability and environmental responsibility into their business systems, highlighted most recently by the Company being included in the ‘2007 Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World’ by Innovest and Corporate Knights. In sponsoring BIOCAP, Alcan is demonstrating the importance of science in informing these kinds of critical policy and investment decisions,” said David Layzell, President and CEO, BIOCAP Canada Foundation.

BIOCAP is helping Canada to move towards a sustainable bioeconomy, which involves the use of the nation’s vast ‘biological capital’ - forest, agricultural and aquatic resources – to provide greenhouse gas emission reductions, carbon sinks, and renewable bioenergy.

BIOCAP Canada is a national not-for-profit foundation that brings together the nation’s researchers with industry, government and non-governmental organizations to deliver the insights, technologies and policy options to support the transition to a sustainable bioeconomy. Operating with a combination of federal, provincial and industry funds since January 2002, BIOCAP has leveraged a CAN$10.5 million federal investment to attract an additional CAN$45.6 million for programs and research from private, provincial and university funding partners.
